New Opaltorget – more public life and meetingplaces
Opaltorget and nearby areas will over the next three years undergo a complete transformation. The square will be developed into an attractive neighbourhood and will acquire its own distinct identity.
A vision for Opaltorget and the area was produced in 2011, creating a vibrant, appealing and secure district with regular public transport links to other areas. It will be a modern square with homes and shops and service facilities in the vicinity and an environment where people are happy. Work is currently in progress to make this vision a reality. The new Opaltorget is no longer just a set of drawings on paper.
The new Opaltorget will have 500 homes surrounding the square, as well as a new church, Opalkyrkan, and a new park, all of which are scheduled for completion by the end of 2020. The remaining 550 homes will be built on Briljantgatan, Smaragdgatan and Rubingatan. There will be a total of 350 homes on Briljantgatan and Smaragdgatan, forming part of the BoStad2021 project.
The construction of the new Opaltorget and 500 of the homes are in full swing. The temporary square is in place (opposite Grevegårdsvägen) and preparations for the new square have begun. The activities at the temporary square include grocery store, pizzeria/restaurant, hairdresser, pharmacy, Kaprifol meat, open preschool and a new Opal room. There is also a temporary playground for children at the square.

The 200 homes on Rubingatan are scheduled for completion in 2023. For the West Gothenburg district, the development of Opaltorget and the surrounding area is an extremely encouraging and progressive investment for the future. More jobs will be created, and the area will be reinforced with a district square with local shops, other activities and service facilities. This will lead to increased purchasing power and more people will move there. A new park will offer further opportunity to socialise and take part in activities suitable for young and old alike.
